PMI Malaysia Chapter News - September 2016

During this season of Merdeka, Malaysia Day and Hari Raya Haji, the Project Management Institute, Malaysia Chapter and its members have at least 2 more reasons to celebrate.

On May 12th this year at our half day seminar and networking night, we were able to share and announce the breaching of a fresh milestone – 600 members. At the time this appeared to be an impossible landmark having meandered in the 400 to 500+ range for a very long period of time.

At the beginning of this year we began with membership strength of 540.

On 12th September, our membership strength has breached 700, to be more precise, we are pleased to announce that we are 701 strong!

Remarkably, in 110 days we had grown by 101 members. Simply amazing! Based on the recent membership trending we are confident that this number will continue to grow, and all thanks to the good support of you, the chapter members.

Secondly, we are proud to share that we also have 500 members who are PMP’s also.

Member Credential Count Summary

Credential Count

We still have great opportunities in front of us to grow.  In Malaysia, we have more than 3,500 PMI Credential holders. Of these, more than 3,200 are PMP® Credential Holders.  Our Chapter membership consists of less than 20% of the PMI Credential holders and a little over 15% of PMP®’s.

In early August, the PMI Asia Pacific office shared with us that the Malaysia Chapter was the fastest growing Chapter in Asia Pacific. We were overwhelmed and humbled by this recognition.

Apart from Membership Growth, your Council has broken new ground in the following ways:

  1. In March, we began our remote outreach activities, by having an evening talk in Penang. This was the first event in 4 years. We are looking to do something in Johore and possibly Sarawak.
  2. In May, we began an Employer Outreach Program – to date we have been into Bank Negara, Gamuda, Johor Corp and Felda Prodata last week!
  3. In July, we had our first PMI Registered Education Providers (REP) forum. I think many of us do not realise, we have 25 REP’s represented in Malaysia.  We plan to make this a half yearly activity.
  4. We are now embarking on a Mentorship program to address the needs specifically looking at growing the pool of PgMP’s and PfMP’s in Malaysia.
  5. We are also looking at organizing some fun activities – Treasure Hunts, Fun Runs and potentially chartering a Toastmasters Club within PMIMY
  6. We have also strengthened our ties with Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) and Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB). We have an MOU with IEM and have used that to deliver CPD’s to participants in the coming PMIMY 3rd International Symposium on 24th-26th October. We have agreed to participate in the International Construction Week and South East Asia EcoBuild on April 14th to 17th, 2017, organized by CIDB.
  7. On 6th September the PMIMY Council Members were invited to HELP University to be interviewed by 3 assessors who are also distinguished Professors from Australia and Korea in relation to HELP’s application to be a PMI GAC (General Accreditation Council) accredited University for their Masters in Project Management degree.  The same evening we were invited to participate in a Dinner Forum.

Assuming HELP Universities application is approved, they will be the first University to be GAC Accredited in both Malaysia and South East Asia.

My team and I look forward to meeting you at our next Evening Talk on 29th September and our next AGM on 12th October. Please do register on the PMIMY website and make the most of the opportunities we are making available.

Finally, Good Things Happen when you become involved with PMI. If you are not already a member, do consider becoming a Chapter Member.

For these remarkable achievements, please join me to thank my Council of Elected Directors and the Volunteer Appointed Directors. Without a team pulling in alignment, none of what has been achieved would have been possible.

Thank you.
